Through Justice Rapid Response (JRR), one of our team members, Emilie, supported UN Women in its focus on enabling gender-sensitive reparative measures by strengthening the capacity of the Government Commission on Recognition and Verification of the Status of Sexual Violence Victims During the Kosovo Liberation War.
The commission was made of members from a variety of professional backgrounds (Legal, Mental Health, Social work, Counselling) whose pioneering mandate was dedicated to establish reparative measures to address the effects of the sexual violence that occurred during the 1998-1999 conflict.
The support involved facilitating capacity-building and reflective spaces in relation to secondary victimisation, vicarious trauma, and self-care among other modules for the Kosovar commissioners. Particular attention was paid to co-constructing a trauma-informed and survivor-centric approach to the holistic engagement of the commission with the survivors, from the first interaction to the last contact with them. In doing so, we set up the building blocks to ensure the engagement with the commission could enable victims and their families the access to restorative justice and for healing to take place.
