Psychological Impact of the Genocidal Violence onto Rohingya Children's Lives and Future

Supporting the analysis to assist international criminal justice mechanisms

Our team shared their technical expertise with Legal Action Worldwide (LAW) to support international criminal justice mechanisms in the prosecution of the genocidal violence perpetrated in Myanmar during the 2017 “clearance operations” against the Rohingya population. The research conducted led to a report “’They wanted to erase us’. Myanmar’s 2017 Clearance operations through the eyes of Rohingya children and genocide.”

We used our Anthropological and Psychological expertise to the shape the methodology, data collection, and the analysis produced throughout the stages of research that led to the report published.

  • Richard mentored the clinicians during their field work, ensuring safe and embedded conceptual understanding of the impact of genocidal violence and transgenerational trauma through on-going clinical and research supervisions.
  • As the only existing Rohingya psychiatrist and paediatrician, Ambia, was instrumental in providing unique psychological and culturally-grounded insights onto child development.
  • Gita, our expert-by-lived experience together with Himal, were crucial in providing an insight into daily living and witnessing of extreme violence and its foundational impact onto family life and young people’s way of being in the world.
  • Together with Emilie, the team could draw out conceptual links to the previous research led in 2023 and on the impact of genocidal violence onto generations and the collective that resonated with the data collected and generated new linkages.

The analysis produced by Manas team as a collective were instrumental to the research findings upon which the legal team built its legal arguments and that led to the published report. It enabled the documentation of Rohingya children’s accounts, credibly and consistently, “of killings, sexual violence, enforced disappearances, the destruction of homes and religious sites, and the deliberate creation of life-threatening conditions”.
